The Eixample (in Catalan L'Eixample) is the name given to the second district of the city of Barcelona, which occupies the central part of the city, in a large area of 7.46 km² that was designed by Ildefonso Cerdá. It is the most populated district of Barcelona and all of Spain in absolute terms (262,485 inhabitants) and the second in relative terms (35,586 inhabitants/km²). In the Eixample district you can find some of the best-known streets and squares in Barcelona, such as Paseo de Gracia, Rambla de Catalunya, Plaza de Cataluña, Avenida Diagonal, Calle de Aragón, Gran Via de las Cortes Catalanas, Calle Balmes, Ronda de Sant Antoni, Ronda de San Pedro, Paseo de San Juan, Plaza de la Sagrada Familia, Plaza Gaudí, and at its ends, Plaza de las Glorias Catalanas and Plaza Francesc Macià. Also, In the Eixample there are numerous points of tourist and civic interest such as the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, the National Theatre of Catalonia, the Barcelona Auditorium, the Monumental Bullring, Casa de les Punxes, as well as numerous cinemas, theatres, restaurants, hotels and other leisure venues.
